Anawim Christian Community requests seed money to provide clothing for the poor, bedding and clothes washing facilities for the homeless in Gresham, Oregon.
Background
Right now, Anawim Christian Community is using the center section of the Red Barn on the Sanctuary property as a warehouse for items to give to the homeless and poor throughout Portland, especially in Rockwood, the poorest, most violent neighborhood in Oregon. We have the only clothing closet open every week in the East County area, where the poorest people in Portland live. And we serve hundreds of homeless people a week, proving food and day shelter not only in Rockwood, but also in two other underserved locations in Portland. We are right on the edge of having more donations than we can store. We are able to store enough clothing, but bedding and sleeping bags and winter clothing are more difficult for us to store. Also, there is no place for the homeless in our area to wash their clothes on a regular basis.
Proposal
As a continuation of our ministry, we propose two changes:
1. A stairway to the loft of the Red Barn. There is a hayloft in the Red Barn that has solid flooring. If we had a stairway in the back of the barn, with a double door and a wall, then we could store winter clothing and larger items there for distribution for the needy. We could store pots, pans, dishes and small furniture for those who obtain housing.
2. A separate storage container We could purchase a Tuff Shed, in the same motif as the Red Barn, and place it behind the barn. That would allow us to store bedding, tarps, tents, sleeping bags and more. This is especially important as the gear of the homeless is stolen on a regular basis. Attached to the shed we would also put one or two washers which would allow the homeless that use our day shelters to wash their clothes.
The total cost of the project would be 8,400 dollars.
Details
The plans for the stairway are already drawn. The estimate for the lumber is $3000. This is two thousand dollars for the stairway itself and a thousand for a doorway and rebuilding the wall on the top level of the Red Barn. The stairway will be built by volunteers who have construction experience (more volunteers are welcome), led by our member Genevieve Cochrane who has contracting experience. The shed will be purchased from and built by Tuff Shed. The cost is 5,300 dollars for the shed and a hundred dollars for hooking up the washer. It will be located next to the Red Barn in the same style as the Red Barn. The shed will be 12’ x 16’. The washer will be located next to the shed and will be available at certain times of the day.
